The Thompson Public Library is pleased to offer free public access to the Internet. A valid Library card in good standing is required.
The Thompson Public Library does not monitor, and has no control over the information accessed through the internet, and cannot be held responsible for its content or quality. Parents or legal guardians are responsible for the supervision of their child’s access to the internet.
Users are limited to library software and may not load other software onto the library’s computers. Users may not download or copy files to user’s own discs or to library discs and drives. Disks may be purchased at the circulation desk for $1, and must remain at the Library for future use.
Patrons may use web-based email accounts, however privacy and security cannot be assured. Chat rooms and instant messaging are not allowed. Patrons viewing highly offensive content will be removed from the computer. Repeat offenders will be banned from computer use.
Computer use may be monitored at any time. Misuse of computers or internet access will result in loss of computer privileges and may also result in the loss of library privileges. Disruptive behavior or excessive noise resulting from computer and/or internet use is considered misuse and will result in immediate termination of computer time and may also result in the loss of all library privileges.
Staff cannot provide in-depth training. Library staff’s availability to assist users with basic computer use or with internet access is limited. Patrons wishing to use computer equipment or access the internet must have basic skills.
Children
An Internet Permission Form must be filled out by a parent/guardian and kept on file for children younger than 18 years old. Children under 8 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when using internet access computers. Computers in the Children’s Room are reserved for use by children up to 14 years of age. Email and social networking websites are prohibited.
Procedures
- Patrons must sign in and out at the circulation desk to use the equipment. A Connecticut library card in good standing valid for use at the Thompson library is required. The card will be held at the circulation desk during use. A guest card is available for use by out of state patrons, a license/ID card will be held at the circulation desk during use.
- Use is limited to 30 minutes when others are waiting, including time required for printing. If no one is waiting, time can be extended to 1 hour.
- The printing fee is .25 cents per page.
